GAPS OF MEMORY
This is a researched based video art Project of Volkan Kızıltunç. Dealing with the intersection between social history and individual memory. For the project, 8 and super 8 mm films being bought from fleemarkets of İstanbul, Vienna, Berlin, Köln, Munich, Milano, Amsterdam, Barselona, Riga, Budapest and Thessaloniki, from second hand shops and also from internet sources. Till now the achive had reached up to 100 hours of digital footage which are converted from 2000 rolls of films from 100 families. As we understood from the written texts from the rolls, these footage are belong to the period between 1960-1985 from the mid class families of Europe and also Turkey.
As an art project looking to the close history of Turkey and Europe, its feeding its concept from the rift between the social history and personal memory. The memory triology consisting of three videos, THE LOOK, GAPS OF MEMORY – ISTANBUL, TYPOLOGY OF MEMORIES and a limited edition photobook, PETIT PAQUETTE. The videos which has both documentary and narrative characteristics, try to chase the traces of the reflections of personal stories to relook to the period and to recreate a voice from the whispers of history.
