Volkan Kızıltunc is a Turkish artist working in between still and moving image and living in Istanbul. After studying archeology he had studied photography and now an academic in the photography department in Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Istanbul. He’s the co-founder and co-director of NOKS Independent Art Space in Istanbul. Recently he's in an artist residency program supported by SAHA Foundation in ISCP( International Studio & Curatorial Program) in New York, United States.

His works focus on time, reconstruction, observation and typologies and try to analyse time in a wider perspective to open up discussions between photography and film.

In 2013 he won ESSL ART AWARD and in 2015 Akbank Contemporary Artists Prize.

He’s exhibited in many international institutions like Passau Museum of Modern Art, ESSL Contemporary Art Museum, MAS Museum, TRAFO Center for Contemporary Art, TORUN Museum of Contemporary Art, Detroit Center of Contemporary Photography, Filter Photo Festival, Taiwan Biennale, Sinop Biannale, Akbank Art Center, Siemens Art Center, Plato Art Center, Merkur Gallery, Elgiz Museum and Istanbul Modern.
Volkan Kızıltunç makes photography series and video installations using the topographic realities of cities as a source and tries to analyse time in a wider perspective far from the photographic moment. As he sees himself as ‘’ a meticulous observer of the city’’ in the search of the situations which are in the threshold between past and future, still and moving image. In his photography and video works he generally interests in the terms “object” and the “situation of beings of objects” in the world of images as in their existences. In most of his exhibited photographs, the image of man is absent. The protagonists of his pieces are generally empty spaces and desolated locations where modernism, industrialism and its utopia reveal their faces hidden in his works. In the city explorations he departs, he tries to transer the visual evidences of situations stucked [in] the threshold between past and future. In his previous photography series Insitu and [In] The Threshold; are about spaces in no-man’s- land, spaces we understand them as a gateway, in which time and space do not exist. Following this conceptual idea, in his works he's interesting in our permanent existence.

In his video works he tries to open up discussions between photography and film by deconstructing the notion of still and moving images. Especially in the silent video ‘The Unspectacular’ which’s relying on displacement and forced gentrification as a strategy to interrogate place and time; he presents not just of the ephemeral moments during times of transformation, but also offer to the viewer a moment of cinematographical observation and contemplation.

Besides, he's also very interested in visual perception of memory. As our memory of the world is experienced through objects, images and their traces, so in his video works he tries to represent our mediated memories and go render visible the tension between remembering and forgetting using fragile and unique 8mm home movies and found footage material.

The relationship between the individual and its urban surroundings are also very big topics for his works. Like in ‘The Nightwatch’, Volkan Kızıltunç tried to create a visual rhythm, where a dialectic of emptiness and fullness, loneliness and crowdedness occured. Equal under the lens of the camera, a sense of individual lives and diversity emerges under a yoyeuristic point of view. The camera distils the flow of everyday life, the movement of people in the city, and reflects on daily reality from an entirely anthropocentric perspective.

In the end, formally, Volkan Kızıltunç's works are characterized by sobriety, minimalism, clarity and simplicity, which gives it a contemporary documentary character. With open eyes and an analytical mind, he reviews our reality in the search for the images that he needs for his visual researches. As his works are based on social-scientific thought and theory, they stand on strong conceptual bases and bring up intellectual discussions that go beyond the known. And also as formally he's been influenced from the generation of objective photography especially from the deadpan aesthetic and symmetry which he uses intensively in his compositions which became a distinctive ornament of his works.
